Blog Theme of the Week (23 Feb - 8 Mar): Candid Expression

Theme of the week (23 Feb - 8 Mar 2009) is Candid Expression.

Enjoy!!!

About Candid Photography
Candid photography is photography that focuses on spontaneity rather than technique, on the immersion of a camera within events rather than focusing on setting up a staged situation or on preparing a lengthy camera setup.

Candid photography is best described as un-posed and unplanned, immediate and unobtrusive. This is in contrast to classic photography, which includes aspects such as carefully staged portrait photography, landscape photography or object photography. Candid photography catches moments of life from immersion in it.

Candid photography is opposite to the stalking involved in animal photography, sports photography or photographic journalistic intrusion, which all have a focus on getting distant objects photographed, e.g. by using telephoto lenses. Candid photography's setup includes a photographer who is there with the "subjects" to be photographed, close, and not hidden. People photographed on candid shots either ignore or accept the close presence of the photographer's camera without posing.

The events documented are often private, they involve people in close relation to something they do, or they involve people's relation to each other. Candids are the kinds of pictures taken at children's birthday parties and on Christmas morning, opening the presents; the pictures a wedding photographer takes at the reception, of people dancing, eating, and socializing with other guests.

Important Announcements

Dear ALL,

Happy V-day.(specially for ladies) ha ha..

1. WALL PICTUREs:-
I have printed the pictures for the wall. Please, those who have dropped pictures for wall, prepare some notes and photo information for the picture. You can be creative as you like. For next week I have pics of Slamet and Indra. if anybody before them in the list want to share the pictures, please let me know.

2. NEXT MEETING topic:-
We will do very basics of photography including advice giving sessions for those who wants to buy new camera or upgrade their gears. At least 4 members suggested me that our previous meetings were difficult to understand specially for those who are beginners and those who haven’t used SLRs. In next meeting, we can help the beginners to know their camera better. We have CANON, NIKON, OLYMUS, SONY users in our group so I think we can give advices to many beginners. If you have suggestion for contents for next meeting, please feel free to share them anytime. They are most welcomed. The next meeting is dedicated to photography lovers who are beginners(have a SLR but don’t know much about settings) or want to know more about the photography equipments.

3. EVENTS:-
We have series of events coming up starting from today. If you have time, please go around and try to shot. If you feel alone & want to go in group, don’t hesitate to email to all members. I hope there will be bunch of us ready to go. If there are events that you know, just feel free to share with other members. And get ready with your gears.

4. BLOG photo:-
One thing I forgot to mention in last email is that, when you take a picture of an unknown person, please ask his/her permission to use it for the blog. you can establish a communication with local people and make new frens when you do this.

I hope the you’ll enjoy the weekends making good pictures.

Best Regards,

Next Theme: Candid Photography

Dear All,

I would like to thank Agung san for his wonderful tutoring on digital enhancement.
Since may people got interested in this, I will create a folder for digitally enhanced pictures. If you want to share your work, please drop digitally enhanced pictures in the folder with your name as the file name. (max 3 pics.)

***** The Theme for upcoming two weeks is “Candid Photography”. To read more about what candid photography is, click here.

We have two weeks to get a good shot for the blog (deadline for uploading to shared folder is 22 Feb). I would recommend you to use freshly taken pictures for the blog and let’s not use digitally treated pictures from now on for the themes, since we will collect them in a separate folder.

I would like to encourage all the members to share their pictures in the BLOG. Please don’t be disappointed if you don’t have a dSLR. You can produce nicer pictures with the camera that you have. Specially for this theme, camera doesn’t matters, but the subject is more important. So, please enjoy taking pictures and I believe that everybody is good at candid photography.

Our next meeting is 23 Feb 2009 (8pm). Venue is C103 (tentative).

Best Regards,
BAJRACHARYA Ashok

Muikamachi Snow Festival

On 15th Sunday, there is a fireworks event in Muikamachi. Some member suggested to make arrangement for returning from the event since it is going to be late. Please send an email to ashokbaj@iuj.ac.jp if you are interested, as the arrangement will depend on the number of people.

Here are some tips for taking firework pictures.
1. use tripod
2. low ISO for sharp picture
3. exposure set between 1 – 15 or 1-20 or bulb if the sky or surrounding is dark.
4. use night shot mode or Hanabi mode in compact digital camera with tripod.
5. you can also play around with settings to produce different effects.

If you do not use tripod, use lenses with bigger aperture and set to higher ISO but the pictures will not be as good as previously mentioned.

Try to make good combination of the firework with the surrounding scenery but try to avoid obstacles.

Have fun!

Best Regards,
BAJRACHARYA Ashok

If you were given a chance to choose a word to describe IUJ Lifestyle, which word would you choose?

For me, I would choose "xtraordinary". Why?
